Six days and five nights on Mount Kenya on the Chogoria route

DAY ONE: Basecamp to Chogoria Bandas

Duration: 4 km (2 - 3 hours)

Altitude climbed: 300m

Accommodation: Chogoria Bandas (3000m)

Meet guides and porters at a little local hotel around midday. Have a quick lunch whilst the crew load up the vehicles. Drive up a rough and muddy track for 22 km through the bamboo zone to the boundary of Mount Kenya National Park. From here, walk up the last 5-6 kms to acclimatise. Overnight at Chogoria Bandas, a small bunkhouse, set near the edge of the forest line.

DAY TWO: Chogoria Bandas to Lake Ellis

Duration: 7 km (5 hours)

Altitude climbed: 600m

Accommodation: Lake Ellis Camp (3600m)

Depart after breakfast, following the track as it leads up through glades of montane forest, with plenty of wildlife around. Arrive at camp in time for lunch after a 3 hour walk. Rest after lunch and then head out to hike nearby Mugi Hill (250m) before returning to camp at dusk.

DAY THREE: Lake Ellis to Lake Michaelson

Duration: 12 km (7 hours)

Altitude climbed: 800m

Accommodation: Lake Michaelson Camp (4000m)

Early morning start, climbing away from Lake Ellis on its west side, across moorland to a ridge which eventually joins the main Chogoria trail. Views of Vivienne Falls and the Gorges Valley are fantastic here, before descending down into the most picturesque campsite in the range, at Lake Michaelson. 

DAY FOUR: Lake Michaelson to Simba Tarn

Duration: 7 km (4-5 hours)

Altitude climbed: 600m

Accommodation: Simba Tarn Camp (4620m)

Climb away from the beautiful Lake Michaelson, ascending into the alpine zone - a world of rock and ice - towards the man peaks, leaving behind the bizarre Giant lobelias and groundsels and onto glacial moraine. Arrive at Simba Tarn after a last short climb up a sharp scree slope.
